JoSAA Counselling 2027 Guide: Process, Rounds, Choice Filling & Seat Allotment

Step-by-step JoSAA counselling guide for IIT, NIT, IIIT and GFTI admission — registration, choice filling strategy, mock allotment, rounds, freeze/float/slide options and document verification.

What is JoSAA?

The Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) conducts common counselling for admission to all IITs, NITs, IIITs and GFTIs — over 60,000 seats — based on JEE Main and JEE Advanced ranks. It typically runs from June to July, right after JEE Advanced results.

The JoSAA Process, Step by Step

  • Registration on josaa.nic.in with your JEE credentials.
  • Choice filling: list institute + branch combinations in your true preference order. Fill generously — 60+ choices is normal.
  • Mock seat allotments (usually two): see where your current choices would land you, then reorder.
  • Choice locking before the deadline; unlocked choices auto-lock.
  • Seat allotment rounds (five in recent years): each round allots the best available choice for your rank.
  • Online reporting: pay the seat acceptance fee and upload documents within the window, every round you hold a seat.

Freeze, Float or Slide?

OptionMeaning
FreezeAccept the allotted seat; exit from further rounds
FloatAccept, but consider better choices in any institute in later rounds
SlideAccept, but consider better branches in the same institute

Choose Float if any higher preference remains anywhere; Slide if you're set on the institute; Freeze only when you've got your genuine first preference.

Choice Filling Strategy

  • Order by your genuine preference, not by last year's closing ranks — the algorithm protects you from 'wasting' a choice.
  • Study opening/closing ranks of the previous two years for realistic anchoring, but include a few ambitious choices above them.
  • Decide the branch-vs-institute question before choice filling, not during allotment panic.
  • Keep documents (Class 10/12 certificates, category certificate, photographs, JEE scorecards) scanned and ready before rounds begin.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many rounds does JoSAA counselling have?

JoSAA has conducted five seat allotment rounds in recent years, followed by CSAB special rounds for vacant NIT+ system seats.

What is the difference between freeze, float and slide in JoSAA?

Freeze locks your allotted seat and exits counselling; Float keeps you eligible for higher choices in any institute; Slide keeps you eligible for better branches within the same institute.

Can I participate in JoSAA with only a JEE Main rank?

Yes — JEE Main rank makes you eligible for NITs, IIITs and GFTIs. IIT choices require a JEE Advanced rank.

What happens if I miss online reporting after seat allotment?

Your seat is cancelled and you exit counselling. Always complete fee payment and document upload within the round's deadline.
